Ganapathi Homa vs Navagraha Homa: Which One Does Your Family Need?

ಗಣಪತಿ ಹೋಮ

Ganapathi homa — removing obstacles at every beginning

Ganapathi homa (ಗಣಪತಿ ಹೋಮ) invokes Vighneshwara, the remover of obstacles, through oblations of ghee, modaka, durva grass and coconut into the sacred fire. It is performed at the start of anything significant — a new home, a business, a wedding season, an exam year, a long journey — and on Sankashti Chaturthi or Ganesha Chaturthi.

It is short (about 1–1.5 hours), needs one purohith, and is the easiest homa to conduct in a Bengaluru apartment. Many families do it on the evening before a griha pravesha or as an annual practice.

ನವಗ್ರಹ ಹೋಮ

Navagraha homa — pacifying the nine planets

Navagraha homa (ನವಗ್ರಹ ಹೋಮ) offers each of the nine grahas — Surya, Chandra, Kuja, Budha, Guru, Shukra, Shani, Rahu and Ketu — their specific samit (twig), grain and mantra. It is prescribed when a jataka shows an unfavourable dasha or gochara, before major life events, on a shashti-poorthi, or as part of a Vastu Shanti for a new house.

A full Navagraha homa takes 2–3 hours and typically needs two purohiths. Nine grains and nine samits are required, so the samagri list is longer. A Navagraha japa may precede it if a specific graha is being addressed.

How to decide

If you have no specific astrological concern and simply want auspicious beginnings, a Ganapathi homa is enough. If an astrologer has pointed to Shani sade-sati, a Rahu–Ketu period, Kuja dosha or an ashtama Shani, or if you are doing an Apoorva griha pravesha, add the Navagraha homa. Many families do both on the same morning — Ganapathi homa first, then Navagraha.

Do not add homas on hearsay. Ask the purohith or astrologer to show you the graha position in the jataka that calls for it — a genuine practitioner will happily do so.

ಸೂಚನೆ · Note: Both homas are performed across Smartha, Madhwa and Srivaishnava traditions. The mantras and sequence differ slightly; tell your purohith your sampradaya while booking.

Frequently asked questions

Can Ganapathi homa be done in an apartment?

Yes. It needs a small homa kunda, a well-ventilated room or balcony and about 90 minutes. Inform the association in advance.

Do I need my jataka for a Navagraha homa?

It helps. The purohith reads the graha positions to decide the number of ahutis per graha and whether a specific graha japa is needed. Without a jataka, a general Navagraha shanti is performed.

Which is done first if both are performed?

Ganapathi homa always comes first, as no ritual begins without invoking Ganapathi.
