What Rudrabhisheka is
Rudrabhisheka (ರುದ್ರಾಭಿಷೇಕ) is the ceremonial bathing of a Shiva linga while the Sri Rudram — the Namaka and Chamaka sections of the Yajurveda — is chanted. It is regarded as the highest form of Shiva worship for removing obstacles, healing illness, pacifying doshas and bringing peace to the household. It may be done at a temple or at home with a small linga.

Dravyas — what is poured
- Water (shuddhodaka) and sanctified kalasha water
- Panchamrita — milk, curd, ghee, honey, sugar — poured one after another
- Sugarcane juice, tender coconut water, fruit juices
- Vibhuti (sacred ash), sandal paste, turmeric water
- Bilva leaves — offered throughout; 108 or 1008 bilva archana with the Ashtottara
- Flowers, dhatura and white flowers; Rudraksha garland for the linga

Namaka, Chamaka and Ekadasha Rudra
A standard Rudrabhisheka has one recitation of Namaka (11 anuvakas) with one anuvaka of Chamaka — about 45 minutes to an hour. Ekadasha Rudra repeats Namaka 11 times with Chamaka, taking 3–4 hours and usually 4–11 purohiths; it is chosen for major sankalpas or during Shravana and Shivaratri. Laghu Rudra (121 recitations) and Maha Rudra are temple-scale events.
Ask your purohith about the Yajurveda shakha — Taittiriya (Krishna Yajurveda) is most common in Karnataka. Rudra homa, where ahutis are offered with each anuvaka, can be added at the end.

- Maha Shivaratri and every Pradosha (13th tithi evening) — especially Shani Pradosha
- Mondays of Shravana and Kartika masa
- Arudra nakshatra days, Amavasya and Pournami
- Birthdays and shashti-poorthi, before surgery or during illness (Mrityunjaya sankalpa)

Frequently asked questions
Can Rudrabhisheka be done at home?
Yes. A small spatika or narmada linga on a plate with a drain, a purohith who knows Sri Rudram, and the dravyas listed above are enough. About 1–1.5 hours.
How is Rudrabhisheka different from Mrityunjaya homa?
Rudrabhisheka is abhisheka with Sri Rudram; Mrityunjaya homa is a fire ritual with the Maha Mrityunjaya mantra. Both are Shiva worship; they are often combined for health sankalpas.
Which is the best day for Rudrabhisheka in 2026?
Maha Shivaratri (15 February 2026), Shravana Mondays (August–September 2026) and Kartika Mondays are the most preferred. Any Pradosha evening is excellent.
