Deepavali Lakshmi Pooja at Home: A Warm, Simple Guide for Your Family

The feeling behind the festival

Deepavali is the one evening of the year when almost every home in Bengaluru glows the same way — a row of diyas at the doorstep, a fresh rangoli, and the whole family gathered a little earlier than usual. Lakshmi pooja is the heart of it. We invite Mahalakshmi, the goddess of prosperity and grace, to walk into a home that has been cleaned, lit and made ready for her.

You don't need an elaborate setup to do this well. What matters is that the house is clean, the lamps are lit before dusk, and the family sits together with a settled mind. This guide walks you through it the way most Kannada households do — simple, unhurried and warm.

A day or two before

• Clean the whole house, especially the pooja room and the main entrance — Lakshmi is welcomed only where there is cleanliness and light.
• Buy a new lamp or two if you can; a fresh silver or brass coin for the kalasha is auspicious.
• Keep ready: turmeric, kumkuma, akshata, sandal, betel leaves and nuts, flowers and a garland, five fruits, a coconut, and sweets for naivedya.
• Arrange enough diyas and wicks for the doorway, balcony and pooja space, plus oil or ghee to keep them burning through the evening.
• Draw or plan a rangoli at the entrance — even a small one tells the goddess she is expected.

Setting up the pooja

In the evening, place a photo or small idol of Mahalakshmi on a clean cloth, with Ganapathi beside her — every pooja begins with Ganapathi so that it proceeds without obstacles. Some families also keep the year's account book, a few coins or a little gold as a symbol of the wealth they are grateful for.

Set a kalasha (a pot of water topped with a coconut and mango leaves) if your family does, and light the two main lamps. Keep the panchamrita, flowers and naivedya within reach so you are not getting up in the middle.

The pooja, step by step

• Light the lamp and do a short Ganapathi prayer to begin.
• Sankalpa — a quiet resolve, naming the day and the family, offering the pooja for everyone's wellbeing.
• Invoke Mahalakshmi and offer the shodashopachara — water for the feet and hands, a bath (abhisheka for an idol), fresh cloth, gandha, kumkuma, akshata, flowers and the Lakshmi Ashtottara (108 names).
• Light dhoopa and deepa, then offer the naivedya — sweets, fruits and the coconut.
• Do the mangala aarti as a family, everyone taking a moment before the flame.
• Distribute prasada, then step out together to light the diyas at the door and windows.

Little touches that make it memorable

• Let the children draw one part of the rangoli and light the first diya — they remember it for years.
• Ask the eldest in the family to do the sankalpa or the aarti; it honours them and keeps the tradition flowing down.
• Keep phones away during the aarti — five quiet minutes together is the real prasada of the evening.
• Share sweets with neighbours and the building staff; Lakshmi pooja is as much about giving as receiving.
