What Shashti-poorthi celebrates
Shashti-poorthi (ಷಷ್ಟ್ಯಬ್ದಿಪೂರ್ತಿ) marks the completion of 60 years of life. In our tradition, 60 years is one full turn of the samvatsara cycle — the person returns to the same year-name under which they were born. It is treated not just as a birthday but as a milestone of gratitude: for a life well lived, and for the family that has grown around it.
For a married couple, the day is also a renewal. The children and family bless the couple again, and the couple re-affirm their bond — a kind of second wedding blessing, performed with the same warmth as the first. The formal name for the shanti done at 60 is Ugra Ratha Shanti.

Why families do the shanti
The shanti performed at 60 is meant for the long life, health and peace of the person completing this cycle. It is a moment for the family to pause and offer thanks — to elders who are usually the ones giving blessings, and now receive them in turn. Grandchildren garlanding their grandparents is often the most moving part of the whole day.
ದಿನದ ಮುಖ್ಯ ಭಾಗಗಳು
The main parts of the day
- Ganapathi pooja and Punyahavachana to begin and purify the setting.
- Kalasha sthapana and the Navagraha / Ugra Ratha Shanti homa for long life and wellbeing.
- Ayushya homa, invoking a healthy, peaceful life ahead.
- For a couple, a re-blessing — mangalya dharana or a symbolic renewal, with the family placing garlands and akshata.
- Aarti, offering of naivedya, and the blessings of elders and the purohith.
- Feast (annadana) and the gathering of family and friends to honour the couple.

Planning it in Bengaluru
- Fix the date on or close to the 60th birthday by the traditional calendar (tithi/nakshatra), not only the English date — your purohith or astrologer will help fix the muhurta.
- A homa needs space and ventilation; a choultry or a community hall is easier than an apartment for the fire ritual and the guests.
- Book the purohith 4–6 weeks ahead — a shanti with homa often needs one or two vaidikas.
- Confirm samagri early: the homa dravya, kalasha items, new clothes for the couple, and garlands. Many purohiths can bring a full kit.
- Plan the day around a morning muhurta, with the feast to follow — this suits most families and traffic.

Making elders feel honoured
- Invite the couple's oldest friends and relatives — the presence of their generation means more than any gift.
- Ask the purohith to explain each step in Kannada so the couple and elders can follow and feel part of it, not just seated through it.
- Let grandchildren offer the garlands and do a small aarti — it becomes the photo the family keeps forever.
- Keep a quiet moment for the couple to bless each family member individually after the pooja.

Frequently asked questions
Is Shashti-poorthi only for married couples?
The re-blessing of the couple is a central part when both partners are present. A shanti and Ayushya homa for long life and health can also be done for a single person completing 60 years.
How long does the ceremony take?
With Ganapathi pooja, the shanti homa, Ayushya homa and the re-blessing, plan for about 3–4 hours in the morning, followed by the feast.
Should we follow the English date or the traditional birthday?
Traditionally the day is fixed by the tithi and nakshatra of birth, so the celebration may fall a little before or after the English 60th birthday. Your purohith or astrologer will fix the muhurta.
