When is Naamakarana done?

Naamakarana (ನಾಮಕರಣ) is the fifth of the sixteen samskaras. Classically it is done on the 11th or 12th day after birth, once the period of birth-related ritual observance ends. In practice many Bengaluru families do it on the 11th, 12th, 16th or 21st day, or on any auspicious day in the third month, depending on the mother's recovery and the family's convenience.

Auspicious days are chosen by the panchanga — shukla paksha tithis, a favourable nakshatra for the child's birth star, and a weekday other than Tuesday or Saturday. Avoid Rikta tithis (4, 9, 14) and eclipse days.

How the name is chosen

Each of the 27 nakshatras has four padas, and each pada has a syllable (akshara). The child's birth nakshatra and pada give the starting syllable for the nakshatra naama — for instance, Ashwini pada 1 gives 'Chu', Rohini pada 2 gives 'Va'. A name beginning with this syllable is believed to resonate with the child's birth star.

Traditionally four names are given: the kuladevata naama (family deity's name), the masa naama (name of the lunar month's presiding form of Vishnu or the deity), the nakshatra naama (from the syllable), and the vyavaharika naama — the everyday name that goes on the birth certificate. The father whispers the names into the child's right ear.

• Ganapathi pooja and Punyahavachana — the home, parents and child are purified.

Practical tips for a Bengaluru home

• Keep the pooja short (60–90 minutes) so the mother and baby are not tired; ask the purohith for a compact vidhi.
• Morning muhurtas suit babies best; avoid homa smoke in the same room as the infant.
• Confirm the birth nakshatra and pada with the purohith from the exact time and place of birth before the day.
• Have the vyavaharika name finalised — the official name is registered with BBMP within 21 days for a free birth certificate.
