How a Shubha Muhurta Is Fixed: Panchanga, Tarabala and the Times to Avoid
What an astrologer actually checks when fixing an auspicious time — the five limbs of the panchanga, chandrabala and tarabala, Rahu kala, Yamaganda, Gulika and Abhijit muhurta.

The five limbs of the panchanga
- Tithi — the lunar day (1–15 in each paksha). Shukla paksha 2, 3, 5, 7, 10, 11, 13 are auspicious for most beginnings; Rikta tithis 4, 9, 14 and Amavasya are avoided.
- Vara — the weekday. Each has a graha lord; Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday are favoured for domestic rituals.
- Nakshatra — the moon's star. Sthira (fixed) stars suit homes and installations; Chara (movable) suit travel; Mridu (gentle) suit celebrations.
- Yoga — 27 combinations of sun and moon; Vyatipata and Vaidhriti are avoided.
- Karana — half a tithi; Vishti (Bhadra) karana is avoided for auspicious work.

Personalising with chandrabala and tarabala
A day good in general may not be good for you. Chandrabala checks the moon's position from your janma rashi — the 1st, 3rd, 6th, 7th, 10th and 11th positions are strong; the 4th, 8th and 12th are avoided. Tarabala counts from your janma nakshatra to the day's nakshatra in a cycle of nine: Sampat, Kshema, Sadhaka, Mitra and Parama Mitra are good; Janma, Vipat, Pratyari and Naidhana (Vadha) are avoided.
This is why the astrologer asks for the rashi and nakshatra of the head of the family (and of the couple for a wedding, the child for Upanayana, the owner for a griha pravesha).

Times to avoid on any day
- Rahu kala — a 90-minute window that shifts by weekday (Monday 7:30–9:00, Tuesday 3:00–4:30, Wednesday 12:00–1:30, Thursday 1:30–3:00, Friday 10:30–12:00, Saturday 9:00–10:30, Sunday 4:30–6:00, adjusted to actual sunrise in Bengaluru).
- Yamaganda and Gulika kala — two more weekday-specific windows; Gulika is especially avoided for new beginnings.
- Durmuhurta and Varjyam — short inauspicious periods listed in the daily panchanga.
- Eclipses, Sankranti day (except the punyakala), the last quarter of Ashlesha/Jyeshtha/Revati (gandanta) for beginnings.

Abhijit and the lagna
Abhijit muhurta — the 48 minutes around local midday — is considered good on most days when no other muhurta is available (except Wednesdays in some traditions). For important events the astrologer also fixes the lagna: a fixed sign (Vrishabha, Simha, Vrishchika, Kumbha) for stability in griha pravesha and marriage, with benefics in the kendra and the 8th house free of malefics.
A good muhurta consultation takes 20–30 minutes and gives you two or three windows so that traffic, venue and family availability can be balanced.

Frequently asked questions
Is Rahu kala the same everywhere?
The sequence by weekday is the same, but the exact clock time depends on local sunrise and sunset. In Bengaluru it shifts by 20–30 minutes across the year.
Can a pooja be done during Rahu kala?
Regular daily worship and Durga/Kali worship are not affected. New beginnings — griha pravesha, business opening, travel, vivaha — are avoided in Rahu kala.
Do I need my exact birth time for a muhurta?
For a simple muhurta, your rashi and nakshatra are enough. For a wedding or Upanayana lagna, the exact birth time helps to check dasha and gochara.
