Direction and placement

Vastu places the pooja room in the Ishanya (north-east) corner of the home, the direction of Ishwara and of the morning sun. If north-east is not available, east or north is the next choice. The deity should face west (so you face east while praying) or east (you face west); avoid placing the deity facing south.

Avoid a pooja space directly under a staircase, sharing a wall with a toilet, or inside a bedroom where feet point toward the deity. In a compact flat, a wall-mounted mandir in the living room's north-east corner works well.

• Wall-hung teak or MDF unit with a fold-down platform for the kalasha during poojas.
• Marble or granite slab niche in the kitchen's north-east wall — common in older Bengaluru layouts.
• A dedicated 3 x 3 ft alcove with a jaali (lattice) door to contain lamp smoke.
• Store pooja items (kumkuma, akshata, camphor) in a drawer below; keep idols at or above chest height.
• Use brass lamps with glass chimneys if you have a smoke detector nearby.

Tulasi in a flat

A tulasi plant is the traditional heart of a Hindu home. On a balcony, place it in the north, east or north-east, in a brindavana (pot) raised on a stand, where it gets 4–5 hours of sun. Water in the morning, offer the lamp in the evening, and avoid plucking leaves on Sundays, Ekadashi and after sunset.

Conducting a homa in a high-rise

• Inform the association / facility manager 5–7 days in advance; many Bengaluru societies allow homas with ventilation conditions.
• Use a small copper or iron homa kunda on a bed of sand in a metal tray; keep the balcony door open or set up on the balcony itself.
• Temporarily cover the nearest smoke detector only if the association permits, and keep a bucket of water and a wet towel at hand.
• Choose compact homas — Ganapathi, Navagraha (small kunda), Sudarshana — and ask the purohith for reduced ahutis if space is tight.
• For large homas (Chandi, Rudra) consider a temple hall or a community hall in the society.
