Date and significance

Varamahalakshmi Vrata (ವರಮಹಾಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಿ ವ್ರತ) is observed on the Friday before Shravana Pournami. In 2026 it falls on Friday, 21 August. Married women (sumangalis) worship Goddess Lakshmi as Varamahalakshmi — the giver of boons — for the well-being of the family. It is one of the most cherished home festivals of Karnataka, Andhra and Tamil Nadu.

Setting up the kalasha

• Previous evening — clean the pooja room, draw a rangoli, place a mane with a plate of rice.
• Kalasha — a silver or brass pot filled with rice or water, a coin, turmeric, betel nut and mango leaves; a coconut smeared with turmeric on top.
• Lakshmi face (mukha) — a silver or painted face is fixed to the coconut; the kalasha is dressed in a new saree or blouse piece, decorated with jewellery, bangles and a garland.
• Place the kalasha on the rice, facing east or west, with a Ganapathi (turmeric cone) beside it.
• Keep the thread (doraa/kankana) — a yellow thread with 9 knots — ready for the wrist tying after the pooja.

Pooja outline

• Morning bath, sankalpa, Ganapathi pooja.
• Kalasha avahana — Varamahalakshmi is invoked into the kalasha; Shodashopachara (16-step) pooja with flowers, kumkuma archana and the Lakshmi Ashtottara (108 names).
• Doraa pooja — nine-knot thread worshipped and tied on the right wrist.
• Naivedya — usually 9 varieties or a chosen number: obbattu (holige), kosambari, payasa, chakkuli, kodubale, fruits, tamboola.
• Aarti with the Varamahalakshmi katha; in the evening, sumangalis are invited for tamboola, turmeric and kumkuma.
• Next day — udvasana (respectfully concluding) by moving the kalasha slightly; the rice is used in cooking.

With or without a purohith?

Varamahalakshmi is most often performed by the women of the house themselves with a book or a family elder guiding. Families invite a purohith for the first Varamahalakshmi after a wedding, for a large gathering, or when they want the full Shodashopachara with Sri Suktam recitation.
