What the vrata is
Mangala Gowri Vrata (ಮಂಗಳ ಗೌರಿ ವ್ರತ) is observed by newly married women on every Tuesday of Shravana masa for the first five years after marriage, praying to Goddess Gowri for a long and happy married life. In 2026 Shravana masa runs from mid-August to mid-September (after the adhika masa earlier in the year), so the Tuesdays fall across late August and early September — your purohith or panchanga will confirm the exact dates.
In the first year the vrata is done at the bride's mother's home; in later years at her own home. Sixteen is the recurring number — 16 wicks, 16 betel leaves, 16 types of flowers or leaves where possible, and 16 sumangalis invited for tamboola.

Setting up
- A Gowri idol (turmeric cone or a silver/clay Gowri) on a mane, with a kalasha.
- A lamp with 16 wicks made from cotton, lit with ghee — the signature of this vrata.
- 16 betel leaves, 16 betel nuts, 16 bananas, 16 blouse pieces (in some families), 16 kinds of leaves/flowers.
- Naivedya — kadubu or obbattu, payasa, and 16 small items in some traditions.
- Doraa (thread) with 16 knots to tie on the wrist.

The pooja and the udyapane
The pooja is a Shodashopachara worship of Gowri with the Mangala Gowri katha read at the end. The bride then offers tamboola to a sumangali and to her mother, and receives blessings. In the fifth and final year, the vrata concludes with udyapane — a fuller pooja, often with a purohith, where the bride's parents gift the daughter and son-in-law, and 16 sumangalis are honoured.
Families increasingly invite a purohith for the first Tuesday and for the udyapane so that the sankalpa and the Gowri avahana are done correctly, and manage the remaining Tuesdays themselves.

Frequently asked questions
What if a Tuesday is missed?
Do the pooja on the next Tuesday of Shravana. If Shravana ends, the missed one is compensated in the following year or at the udyapane on a purohith's advice.
Is the vrata only for five years?
Five years is the classical observance, ending with udyapane. Some women continue it every Shravana as a family practice.
Can it be done in the evening?
Morning is preferred, but working women in Bengaluru often do it before sunrise or in the early evening. The intent and regularity matter most.
