10 Questions to Ask Before Booking a Home Pooja
A short checklist that prevents 90% of pooja-day surprises — tradition, muhurta, samagri, number of priests, duration, dakshina etiquette and contingency.

The ten questions
- 1. Which tradition and shakha do you follow, and do you perform in ours? — The first filter for any samskara.
- 2. Will you fix or confirm the muhurta? — Share the head of household's rashi and nakshatra.
- 3. Who arranges the samagri? — Kit from the purohith, or a list for us to buy?
- 4. How many purohiths are needed? — A homa or vivaha usually needs two.
- 5. How long will it take, and what time will you arrive relative to the muhurta?
- 6. Which language will you explain in? — Kannada, Telugu, Tamil, Hindi or English.
- 7. What should the family do beforehand? — Fasting, bath, clothing, cleaning the pooja room.
- 8. Can the pooja be done in an apartment? — Homa kunda size, ventilation, association rules.
- 9. Dakshina and travel — discussed respectfully and confirmed before the day.
- 10. What happens if there is a delay? — Traffic and monsoon are real in Bengaluru; know the backup muhurta window.

Preparing the home
Clean the pooja space the previous evening, keep a mane (wooden plank) or low table for the kalasha, and set aside a clean cotton cloth. Keep the deity's photos or idols wiped and ready. If a homa is planned, protect the floor with a layer of sand or a metal tray under the kunda, and open windows for ventilation.
Family members usually bathe, wear traditional clothes and avoid onion-garlic food that morning. Keep drinking water, a towel and a chair ready for the purohith — small courtesies that make a long ceremony comfortable.
ದಕ್ಷಿಣೆ
On dakshina
Dakshina is offered with respect at the end of the pooja, traditionally on a betel leaf with a betel nut, fruit and a coin, placed in the purohith's hand with both hands. Discussing it clearly beforehand is not disrespectful — it avoids awkwardness for both sides. Frequently asked questions
Should I fast before a home pooja?
For vratas like Satyanarayana or Varamahalakshmi, the person taking the sankalpa usually fasts until prasada. For general poojas a light sattvic breakfast is fine. Ask your purohith.
Do I need to keep the pooja room facing a particular direction?
Ideally the person performing faces east or north, with the deity facing west or south accordingly. The purohith will arrange the mandapa on arrival.
Can we take photos or video during the pooja?
Yes in most homes, but ask the purohith first and avoid flash during the homa or the Brahmopadesha moment.
