Why we worship our tools
Ayudha Pooja comes in the last days of Navaratri, when Goddess Durga is honoured as the source of all strength and skill. On this day we thank the tools, vehicles, machines, instruments and books through which we earn our living and learn — a carpenter's chisel, a driver's auto, a student's books, a tailor's machine, an office laptop. It is a beautifully democratic festival: every kind of honest work is sacred.
In 2026, Ayudha Pooja (Maha Navami) falls on Tuesday, 20 October, and Vijayadashami on Wednesday, 21 October — the day the Mysore Dasara procession is held.

How families and businesses do it
- Homes worship two-wheelers, cars, kitchen tools and the children's books and instruments.
- Shops and offices worship the cash box, computers, machines and vehicles, and keep the day as rest for the tools.
- Students place their books and pens before Saraswati and avoid studying that day — the books 'rest' too.
- Everything is cleaned, decorated with turmeric, kumkuma and flowers, and offered a coconut and naivedya.

Vijayadashami — the day to begin
Vijayadashami is considered one of the most auspicious days of the year — a 'vijaya muhurta' that needs no further checking. It is the classic day to begin something new: a child's Aksharabhyasa (first writing of letters), the start of learning music or dance, a new venture, or resuming work after Ayudha Pooja. Elders bless the young, and many families exchange banni (shami) leaves as a symbol of victory and goodwill.
