In Karnataka the festival is really two joined days. On the eve, married women observe the Swarna Gowri Vrata (ಸ್ವರ್ಣ ಗೌರೀ ವ್ರತ), welcoming Goddess Gowri — Parvati — to her parents' home. The next day her son Ganesha arrives, and the two are worshipped together as Gowri-Ganesha. In 2026, Ganesha Chaturthi falls on Monday, 14 September, with the Gowri Vrata observed the previous day.
This is why so many Bengaluru homes keep both a Gowri kalasha or idol and a clay Ganesha side by side. The mood is joyful and homely — Ganesha is treated like a guest who has come to stay for a few days.

What to keep ready
- A clay (mannina) Ganesha — please avoid Plaster of Paris idols, which harm our lakes.
- For Gowri: a small idol or a kalasha with a decorated face, turmeric, and the gauri-daara (sacred thread).
- Durva grass (21 blades), red flowers and hibiscus, mango leaves and a banana stem for the mantapa.
- Modaka or kadubu, chakkuli and fruits for naivedya; jaggery and coconut.
- Turmeric, kumkuma, akshata, sandal, betel leaves and nuts, camphor, lamps and agarbatti.

The pooja, step by step
- Light the lamp and pray; take the sankalpa naming the day and family.
- Worship Gowri first — offer the vrata, tie the gauri-daara, and place naivedya.
- Install Ganesha, invoke him, and offer the shodashopachara with 21 durva blades.
- Offer modaka and fruits, then read the Ganesha katha as a family.
- Do the aarti and share prasada; keep the idol for 1, 3, 5 or more days as your family does.

A calm visarjana at home
For a small clay Ganesha, a bucket or drum of water at home works beautifully — the idol dissolves in a few hours, and the water can be poured into your garden or a potted plant. Many apartment associations now keep a common visarjana tank; ask yours. A short aarti and a heartfelt 'ಪುನಃ ಬನ್ನಿ' (come again next year) is the perfect send-off.
