Step by step

  1. Sankalpa & Kaandarshi Tarpana

    Sankalpa & Kaandarshi Tarpana

    Begin with sankalpa and offer tarpana to the rishis of the veda (Kaandarshi tarpana).

    Mahasankalpa & prayaschitta

    Perform the mahasankalpa and prayaschitta for lapses in the year's observance.

    Yajnopavita dharana

    Wear the new yajnopavita (sacred thread) with the prescribed mantras; discard the old thread after.

    Veda-arambha (Upakarma)

    Recommence Vedic study by reciting the opening of one's shakha.

    Gayatri Japa

    Perform a large Gayatri japa (often 1008) on this day.

Note: Utsarjana (formal pause of study) is done later. Rigvedins and Samavedins observe Upakarma on different days (see below).
