The kalash (ghat) installation and barley sowing that begins nine nights of Durga worship in North India.

Samagri you'll need

  • Clay pot (ghat) & clean soil
  • Barley (jau) seeds
  • Kalash, coconut, mango leaves
  • Red cloth, akhand jyoti (lamp)

Step by step

  1. 1

    Ghatasthapana

    In the morning muhurta, sow barley in soil and install the kalash over it with a coconut.

  2. 2

    Akhand jyoti & invocation

    Light the continuous lamp and invoke Durga into the kalash.

  3. 3

    Daily Durga pooja

    Worship the nine forms of Durga over nine days with Durga Saptashati path.

  4. 4

    Kanya pujan & visarjan

    On Ashtami/Navami do Kanya Pujan; conclude and immerse the ghat/jau on Dashami.

Note: The North Indian counterpart to Golu; barley sprouts (jau) are shared as prasad.
